GSMA supports Safer Internet Day 2010

On Safer Internet Day 2010, the GSMA joins thousands of stakeholders worldwide in raising awareness about the positive and responsible use of communications technologies by children and young people. The GSMA leads and participates in a host of international initiatives promoting a responsible approach to children’s use of mobile phones, fighting illegal content on mobile community services and increasing media literacy. These initiatives include the European Framework for Safer Mobile Use, the Mobile Alliance against Child Sexual Abuse Content and Teachtoday.

GSMA Initiative Helps Save Lives and Create Safer Roads for European Citizens
9th September 2009, Brussels: The GSMA, the body representing the worldwide mobile communications industry, today signed a Memorandum of Understanding to secure the deployment of a single, in-vehicle emergency call service, known as eCall, across Europe. Rob Conway Chief Executive Officer and Member of the Board of the GSMA visited the offices of Viviane Reding, European Commissioner for Information Society and Media, to sign the MoU on behalf of the global mobile industry.

Europe’s e-communications providers call on the EU to ensure a truly
multi-stakeholder model for ICANN
BRUSSELS – The effective technical coordination and management of the Internet’s domain
name and addressing systems, which is ICANN’s core mission, is a crucial element for the stability
and growth of the Internet and hence for Europe’s e-communications providers and the global
business community. As the Joint Project Agreement (JPA) between ICANN and the US
Department of Commerce comes to an end, ETNO, EuroISPA and GSMA Europe - representing
Europe’s leading e-communications providers - strongly call on the EU to ensure that the privatesector
led multi-stakeholder model on which ICANN is built is preserved and enforced, as a key
factor of Internet’s success.

The European Framework for Safer Mobile Use- Pricewaterhouse Coopers implementation report
16 April 2009- Two years on from the introduction of the European Framework for Safer Mobile Use by Younger Teenagers and Children, Pricewaterhouse Coopers published a report summarising the status of its implementation in the EU. The report shows that the Framework has been transposed into codes of conduct in 22 EU Member States and that mobile operator signatories have taken substantial action to implement these codes alongside other voluntary activities. Consequently around 580 million mobile customers, representing 96% of all EU mobile subscriptions, currently benefit from the self-regulatory initiative.

European Mobile Industry Observatory
In September 2008 the GSMA published a comprehensive review of the European mobile industry, the 'European Mobile Observatory'. The report aims to provide a reference point for participants in the mobile industry, policy makers and other stakeholders with regard to the state of the industry. It covers key statistics and performance indicators, the evolution of competition, innovation in new products, services and technologies and the contribution of the mobile industry to social and economic development.
